Farewell, Franco

November 1931. Franco’s funeral is held, and there are no dry eyes. Marla looks at the gravestone and imagines Lenny’s name on it. Giuseppe becomes torn when Salvatore begins probing him on David, Marco & Lenny’s recent actions. Giovanna and Giuseppe notice Salvatore’s expression is darker and colder. Salvatore orders everybody to hunt down James Jr, meanwhile David and Marco begin to wonder if they will ever be able to escape this life as they struggle with the grief of their brother’s death. Meanwhile, overlooking the funeral are FBI agents Raymond J. Caffrey and William “Buck” Buchanan, assigned to investigate the rise of crime in New York City (and the deaths of the congressman).

All For Nothing

David and Marco have tracked down James Jr to a cabin outside of town. Meanwhile, Marla is approached by Caffrey and Buchanan and is teased over Franco’s death, implying it will happen to Lenny next. Marla returns home and argues with Lenny over his life, Lenny promises he will change but Marla believes it is impossible. Marla leaves him, Giovanna consoles Lenny. Salvatore blows off David and Marco and visits James Jr. James shows no remorse and utters “my job is complete”. James then commits suicide as Salvatore watches. Salvatore collapses to his knees. NYPD suddenly swarm in, but David and Marco, who followed Salvatore save him. Salvatore returns home and collapses in Franco’s old room. Lenny visits Giuseppe and begs him to keep their actions a secret, believing that he needs to find a way out, if not for himself then at least for Marla. Giuseppe suffers several flashbacks to all the times Lenny covered for him when they were young, telling Lenny he sees himself in him.

Heart of Gold

Salvatore is approached to make a charitable donation to a children’s hospital. Salvatore declines, worrying the rest of the family. Meanwhile, the FBI agents meet with the CEO of the hospital, and want to send them in on the ground level to try and get them close to Salvatore. The CEO objects, but the FBI agents threaten him with evidence of him cheating on his wife. The CEO is forced to agree. The episode ends with several screens, first the CEO and Salvatore looking dejectedly out of their house’s windows, then Lenny and Marla, who imagine the other being with them, then Giuseppe and Giovanna, as they become torn with their father / husband’s recent actions, and struggle to see the old Salvatore, the charitable and charming leader.

Breaking Point

Giovanna forces Salvatore to visit a psychiatrist and the results are worrying. Lenny visits Marla but Marla rebukes him, urging Lenny to think of his brother and leave that life. Lenny leaves and sees a jewellery store. He heads inside and looks at rings. Tears form in his eyes. Giuseppe, David and Marco have a meeting and discuss everything. Each member reveals they feel disillusioned and dejected, especially as business in the saloon declines. Meanwhile, the FBI agents meet with the CEO, who is still apprehensive.

New Strategies

Salvatore opts to hold a family meeting, however Lenny is nowhere to be found. Giuseppe finds him at a river, a river that is Marla’s favourite. Giuseppe bluntly tells him “It’s us or her.. choose.” Lenny feels betrayed as he infers this as his brother choosing Salvatore, but Giuseppe says he’s prioritising the family, to which Lenny replies they aren’t a family, but a bunch of cold blooded killers. The two walk back in silence. The family discuss the declining business and opt to go into advertising. They go to an advertising agency and pick out a billboard for Rum. The FBI agents see it and become disgusted. They try to take it down, but the NYPD order them down. They hunt the NYPD agents down to an alleyway and kill them. They return to the billboard, but decide to just leave it. They have a final meeting with the CEO as he goes undercover.

A Shocking Turn Of Events

The CEO goes in on the ground floor, posing as someone interested in selling some high class rum to the Rinaldi’s. David and Lenny are unsuspecting and agree however Salvatore sees through him. Salvatore corners him, interrogates him and after the CEO fails to get his story right, Salvatore brings him into the saloon. To the horror of the people in the saloon, the CEO is shot dead by Salvatore in front of everyone. Slowly, everyone begins to leave the saloon. Salvatore returns with blood all over him and grounds David and Lenny, confining them to working as bartenders at the saloon for falling for the CEO’s con. Meanwhile, the FBI agents show up to a meeting with the CEO. When the CEO doesn’t show up, they decide to pick a new strategy. Marco visits David and Lenny, confined to the bar, where they express their utter shock. Salvatore catches him visiting David and Lenny and grounds him. Marco finds out Giuseppe snitched on them after Salvatore pressured him, deepening the family’s rift

A Family's Day Out

Salvatore, needing to clear his head, takes Giovanna and Giuseppe on a days out of town. Lenny, David and Marco are forced to stay in the saloon. However, Marla’s mother arrives, revealing she’s been detained by the FBI for questioning regarding the Rinaldo family. Buchanan and Caffrey know that the three, especially Lenny will show up, so they leave the questioning to someone else, as they flee the building. The three men show up, fight there way through tens of FBI agents and manage to free Marla. They take Marla back to the saloon to reunite her with her mother. Marla is furious at Lenny for his rampage and goes home, leaving Lenny dispirited. Salvatore returns home and hears what happened. He loudly reprimands the three for endangering the business, and punches Lenny. Lenny leaves the bar, bleeding and miserable, stuck between a father who hates him and an ex who is terrified of him. Marco sees Giuseppe in the bar and presses him, telling Giuseppe he has ruined every persons life.

A Dying Breed

Protests against prohibition fill the streets of NYC. Giuseppe suggests switching away from selling alcohol but Salvatore believes alcohol is the backbone of the family, he even goes as far as berating Giuseppe for suggesting such a “stupid” idea. Caffrey and Buchanan come up with a new plan to force Lenny out of the gang.

An Offer He Can't Refuse

Salvatore finds out from Giuseppe that Lenny is thinking about quitting. Salvatore is disgusted and beats the pulp out of Lenny. Lenny leaves and runs into Marla, who takes him to a hospital and comforts him. They head to their favourite river where Caffrey and Buchanan offer him a deal: Leave town now, and you won’t be charged, or end up dead with the rest of the family. Lenny reveals this to Marla, who doesn’t say anything. David, meanwhile, meets with protestors and finds out that Salvatore’s direct actions have caused the protests, which doesn’t shock him. Giuseppe meets Marco and David and apologises, to which the two men accept but agree that the real person he has to apologise to is Lenny, Giuseppe tells them that he will ensure that Lenny will leave the family behind, even if he dies from Salvatore’s wrath while doing it.

A Way Out

Giuseppe visits Lenny and Lenny reveals the FBI deal, telling Giuseppe he is torn on whether to take it. Giuseppe encourages him to take it and find true love, something Giuseppe never could. The two take the rest of the family, apart from Salvatore and exchange heartfelt goodbyes with Lenny and Marla. Before he leaves, Lenny tells them that there is only one thing they need to do - “Finish Salvatore”. Lenny assumes a new identity and leaves with Marla. Salvatore visits protestors and coldly tells them that there is no difference between him and god, as protestors look on in horror. When Lenny doesn’t return home that night, Salvatore becomes furious, berating the entire family for their uselessness. He punches Giuseppe, who now realises all those years of loyalty meant nothing. He visits David and Marco and the three come up with plans to overthrow Salvatore. The FBI finally charge the family with their crimes.
