Stream It or Skip It: ‘Raised by Wolves’ on HBO Max, a Ridley Scott-Produced Tale About Atheist Androids Raising Religious Children

When sci-fi gets complicated, when you have to keep track of names of races and ships and various other rules of the show’s universe, it gets tiring if you’re not a sci-fi nut. When sci-fi is simple, though, it can be a thing of beauty. Raised By Wolves, produced by Ridley Scott, who also directed the first two episodes, keeps things simple. Two androids, raising humans on a foreboding planet. It does end up getting a little more complicated than that, but not all that much. Read on for more.
Opening Shot: A teen boy’s voice says, “We were the first, the pioneers. But we weren’t scared.” We hear some radio scratchiness, then a massive explosion. “We knew that, no matter what happened, Mother and Father would always keep us safe.”
The Gist: Earth has become uninhabitable, and we see a somewhat hospitable planet called Kepler-22b. A small spacecraft crashes on the surface, balancing precariously on the lip of a massive, deep hole. Two androids named Mother (Amanda Collin) and Father (Abubakar Salim), wake up, and Father tells Mother a very funny (to androids) joke to lighten the mood. They are able to take only about half their cargo before the shuttle crashes into the hole.
