‘Betty’ on HBO Needs to Be Your Summertime Stream

T

his summer, we may not be able to have the ideal poolside drink or host an outdoor barbecue — but there are plenty of new shows to stream. And so far, HBO might have the best summertime series available: Betty, which follows a group of girl skateboarders in New York City. Whether you’re into skating or you’re too scared you’ll break an arm, this show is a must-watch.

Betty is a spinoff series of the hit indie film Skate Kitchen, which is available to stream on Hulu. While both follow the same characters, Betty’s storyline is completely unrelated to its predecessor. Instead of following one character — the original is primarily about Camille (Rachelle Vinberg) — Betty hops around from girl to girl, and story to story.

With both the initial project and this new series, director Crystal Moselle has established the radiance of these skater chicks, and everything about Betty is so delightfully summery and carefree. The pilot episode begins with a girl skate sesh organized by Kirt (Nina Moran), the outspoken comedian of the girls. She’s well-equipped with a full jug of Arizona Arnold Palmer, the perfect summertime refreshment. Kirt and Janay (Dede Lovelace) meet videographer Honeybear (Kabrina Adams). The girls start their skating, but it’s not long before they meet their first foe: torrential downpour. They rush to shelter, clinging to their boards, laughing along the way. It’s summer. Storms, while uninvited, are a common occurrence.
