I May Destroy You is the most important thing you have to watch this year

A

year without Michaela Coel on our screens is a year too long, but aside from a guest judge spot on RuPaul’s Drag Race UK last year, that’s what we’ve had to contend with.

2018’s Black Earth Rising and Been So Long came and went, and then: silence, but for a good reason.

The award-winning actor had her hands full with I May Destroy You, an HBO-BBC coproduction which she created, wrote, executive produced, co-directed and stars in.

This isn’t the first time Coel has brought her own work to life.

She created, penned and placed herself front and centre in Chewing Gum, which won her two BAFTAs and two Royal Television Society accolades, so the scale of her ambition is nothing new.

The sitcom was inspired by her own experiences of growing up on an estate in Tower Hamlets with her mum and sister.

She wrote what she knew and the world lapped it up, so it’s unsurprising that Coel has stuck to that approach with I May Destroy You.
