Jon Stewart Returns To TV News With New Apple TV+ Current Affairs Show

Jon Stewart will be returning to TV screens with a new show for Apple TV+ discussing current affairs. The former Daily Show host helmed the satirical news program for 16 years before passing the torch to current frontman Trevor Noah in 2015. During his time as host, Stewart popularized a form of satirical news program that led to a boom in similar enterprises, many hosted by former Daily Show correspondents like John Oliver’s Last Week Tonight and Full Frontal with Samantha Bee. His witty commentary on the absurdity of contemporary politics motivated a generation of disillusioned younger viewers to take an interest in politics themselves.

Stewart’s departure from the Daily Show in 2015 (a year before Donald Trump was elected President) had many fans lamenting the absence of his unique voice during a time when people would eagerly listen to his take on events. Stewart’s self-appointed replacement Trevor Noah has successfully carried on the show’s legacy while adding his own style, but some longtime Daily Show viewers found the irony of Stewart’s timing bitter. But now, Stewart is coming back.

THR reports the former fake news anchor has inked a multiple-season deal with Apple TV+ to resume his place behind the news desk with a new show about current affairs. Every episode will focus on a different topic: the subject matter will be a mix of news items and issues Stewart has personally explored as an activist. Each hour-long episode will also have a corresponding podcast. Stewart is executive producing via his company Busboy Productions, along with his manager James Dixon and Richard Plepler, formerly the chairman and CEO of HBO. Busboy Productions has a first-look deal for certain future Apple TV+ projects as part of the deal. A showrunner hasn’t been announced yet.
